Outreach Specialist, State Historical Fund,

Executive Director and State Historic Preservation Officer

FrankfortThe Kentucky Heritage Council, an agency of the Tourism, Arts & Heritage Cabinet, is seeking an executive director and State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) to administer Kentucky’s State Historic Preservation Office. The Executive Director reports to a sixteen member Council, which is appointed by the Governor, and supervises a staff of professional historians, architectural historians, historic architects, archaeologists, and planners. As SHPO, the Executive Director manages the federal preservation program in Kentucky, including the National Register of Historic Places, Historic Preservation Tax Credits, Section 106 Environmental Review, Certified Local Governments and Preservation Grants-in-Aid. The Council office is located in the historic Swigert-Taylor-Bradley house in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky.
The Kentucky Heritage Council maintains award-winning preservation programs. The Council has consistently ranked among the top SHPOs in the country with regard to National Register listings, Main Street commercial revitalization activities, use of Transportation Enhancements grants, Preserve America city and county designations, rural preservation work, and public archaeological education programs. The Council's statewide mandate is to identify, preserve, and protect Kentucky’s important historic and cultural resources. To help achieve this goal, the Council has an active Main Street Program, administers several state preservation commissions (African American, Native American, and Military Heritage), and has partnered with the University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology to administer the Kentucky Archaeological Survey. By working with other state and federal agencies, local communities, and interested citizens, the Council has built a greater awareness of Kentucky’s past and encouraged the long-term preservation of Kentucky’s significant historic and cultural resources.The Council seeks an Executive Director to build on current program strengths and provide leadership to the Commonwealth on preservation issues. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This is a highly responsible, upper-level management position requiring a degree in historic preservation or a closely related field with 10 years of professional experience and five (5) years of experience in an administrative capacity. A graduate degree in historic preservation or a related field is desired. A combination of education, work experience, and supervisory responsibilities can be substituted.
The successful candidate must have a professional record of significant accomplishments in historic preservation. This candidate should demonstrate evidence of substantial administrative experience, extensive hands-on work related to historic preservation and archaeological resources, and a strong commitment to both historic preservation and serving the public.
SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary range is from $65,000 to $70,000. An excellent fringe benefits package includes health insurance, accrued annual leave, accrued annual sick leave, accrued annual comp leave, holidays, and retirement.

This (part-time) Senior History Specialist position will support the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) and the historic preservation section through the implementation of the "Education and Outreach Plan for Historic Preservation." The selected individual will plan and implement educational outreach programs and materials to promote HPC and historic preservation in Montgomery County, and provide support for the County Executive Award for Historic Preservatio programs. The candidate will assist with the Heritage Tourism Initiative, as well as coordinate and administer the Historic Preservation Grant fund. Another function of this position will be to oversee all aspects related to the production of the HPC's quarterly newsletter, "Preservationist" to include article development, writing and editing, coordination with the printer, and distribution.
A Bachelor's degree is required with a concentration in historic preservation, American studies, archaeology, or African American studies; and 3 years of professional or related experience, including one year as a program coordiantor, OR a Master's degree in one of the above fields; and one year of experience; or an equivalen combination of education and experience. Architectural Historian/Preservation Planner

The Ohio Historical Society is seeking a highly experienced historic preservation professional to serve as Director of Historic Preservation & Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer (see attached complete position announcement). The position reports to the Deputy Executive Director and manages all operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, including 27 staff with a $1.7 million annual operating budget.
Position Summary
Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) and assume a leadership role, as a member of the executive management team, in the advancement of the organization’s strategic priorities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrate entrepreneurial leadership in developing short- and long-range plans for the OHPO, consistent with the institution’s strategic vision. Oversee the responsibilities of the state historic preservation office as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act and relevant sections of the Ohio Revised Code, with signatory authority for the SHPO. Serve as Executive Secretary to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board. Promote financial health of programs through increasing revenue generation. Pursue ways to expand institutional involvement to a variety of stakeholders and constituents. Duties:The State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation is seeking a Physical Anthropologist Assistant.
The field assistant will work under the direction of the State Physical Anthropologist on the identification, removal and reinterment of human remains. The field assistant may also work under the direction of the State Physical Anthropologist to determine whether additional remains or archaeological deposits may be in a project area once an initial set of remains is identified, coordinate findings with the cemetery database manager, and fill out site forms. The assistant to the State Physical Anthropologist will be responsible for notifying Tribes when human remains are determined to be Indian, or other descendants as appropriate, as well as coordinate with state agencies, local governments, and local cemeteries. The assistant to the State Physical Anthropologist will work with Tribes and/or other descendents on the removal and reinterment of human remains when necessary or requested by a Tribe, descendent, or property owner. The assistant to the State Physical Anthropologist will assist with the administration of the grant program reimbursing property owners for the cost of the removal of human remains when the State Physical Anthropologist is unable to conduct removal activities themselves.Special RequirementsMust meet minimum qualifications for a professional archaeologist as defined in RCW 27.53.030.
Must have experience in preparing professional reports summarizing the analysis and documentation of human remains, and education and experience in the identification and treatment of human remains.
Expertise in archaeological field methods and theory.
Advanced knowledge of Section 106, RCW 27.53, RCW 27.44, RCW 68.60, SEPA, NAGPRA and all federal and state laws and regulations as they apply to archaeological properties, cemeteries and human remains.

Manage and supervise all personnel in the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Archaeology programs in multiple locations in Wyoming. Establish priorities, coordinate and integrate all SHPO and Archaeology program activities as part of the Division of Cultural Resources (CR), in collaboration with other CR program managers and directly with the division administrator. Represent the Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources on historic preservation and archaeological issues at the state, regional and national levels. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Manage the SHPO and Archaeology programs in a way which reflects the interests of the State and its citizens while fulfilling statutory obligations. Provide daily oversight of all aspects of the two programs in Cheyenne and Laramie. Work closely with the State Archaeologist to oversee the Laramie staff and in maintaining the partnership with UW. Provide lead representation for the Department on historic preservation and archaeological issues at the state, regional and national levels. Establish and maintain relationships which benefit the program with the legislature, industry and the public. Establish priorities, coordinate and integrate all SHPO and Archaeology program activities as part of the Division of CR, in collaboration with other CR program managers and directly with the division administrator, to assure implementation of department goals, activities and efficiencies.
