Recent News

The President has charged the Department of the Interior to look into the creation of a National Monument (under the Antiquities Act of 1906) for the War in the Pacific. Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Lyle Laverty has initiated an investigation with Department of Defense World War II military historians to set the broad themes for the exercise. His directive is to take a comprehensive approach in identifying sites relevant to telling the story of the War in the Pacific.

NCSHPO Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation

In an effort to recognize SHPOffices and staff for outstanding programs and service, the NCSHPO introduced the NCSHPO Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation in 2005.

Preserve America

On May 9, 2007, Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States and Honorary Chair of Preserve America, announced and presented the 2007 Preserve America Presidential Awards at a White House Rose Garden ceremony. This is the highest national award for historic preservation achievement.

In the Heritage Tourism category, the two winners were:

• USS Midway Museum: San Diego, California
• Natchitoches-Cane River Region Heritage Tourism: Louisiana

In the Private Preservation category, the two winners were:

• The History Channel, Save Our History: Nationwide and New York City
• Downtown St. Louis Revitalization: Missouri
